Directed by Nandita Das, the much awaited biopic of controversial and celebrated short story manifesto Saadat Hasan Manto had hit the screens on 21st September 2018. The movie stars Gangs of Wasseypur actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Manto.
Manto himself had been accused of being a controversial figure and through out his life, the writer had faced court proceedings and numerous charges of obscenity but it looks like even his biopic isn’t free of controversies. Upon the release of Manto, the screening of the film was cancelled in numerous cities of India.
The screenings were cancelled in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmadabad, Noida, and Pune. Nandita Das expressed immense disappointment and grief upon the cancellation of screenings as the directed claims that it took her more than 6 years to make Manto and reality.

The showtimes of the film were updated a day ago however, the next morning ‘abrupt’ instructions were issued to cancel screenings, reported by the sources.
The claims addressed that the censoring body of India had some issues about several dialogues in the movie. The director Nandita Das is hopeful that the issue would be resolved on priority basis and the screenings of the movie would be resumed without further delay.
Saadat Hasan Manto, was an Indo Pak short story writer who had written about the social taboos and the events that he faced after the partition. Manto has numerous famous short stories to his account including Toba Tek Singh, Thanda Gosht and Bapu Gopinath
The cast of the film also includes Rasika Dugal, Paresh Rawal, Javed Akhter and Divya Dutta.
