If you live in Pakistan, you are most likely to come across a ‘Baby Baji’ within your family, or in your community. And those who have seen the blockbuster Load Wedding can easily relate to Faiza Hassan’s role in the film. Not only did she steal the spotlight for portraying the phuppo character with such authenticity, but also reminded the audience of someone they might know around them.
Recently while speaking in an interview with BBC, Faiza Hassan revealed how she felt about society’s standards for a woman’s body size and beauty.
“If you look at our iconic films actresses, here, in Bollywood and even Hollywood, they were all full-figured,” said Faiza as she spoke about how only skinny girls get lead roles in films and TV series now.
“I’m very happy that I got to play this character,” she said.
She shared that the industry having no sense of inclusion and acceptance has always bothered her. Faiza said she was fed up of getting similar roles just because of her weight.
“Only because I’m overweight ‘according to you’, I can’t get a normal working woman’s role? As actors, we need to look past age, size and color,” she added.
Faiza also said, “If the western industries can accept plus size models, then why can’t we? The standard model will always be talked about for her figure, be it male or female, but an actor is known for his/her acting and presence on screen. Our responsibility is to perform well as actors, however, it’s sadly not the case today.”
The Baby Baji actress has also raised a very important concern related to romance shown in films and dramas.
She further added, “Why is romance restricted to a certain age bracket? Do only 16-17-year-old girls fall in love? Are there no other stories to tell?”
