Mahira Khan Wins An Award At The UK Asian Film Festival!

It’s amazing how just a decade ago, Pakistani actors and the industry didn’t have much influence in the world but now that the talent of this country is slowly being recognized by popular platforms abroad, our actors are leaving no stone un-turned. Mahira Khan is also one of these incredible artists who had the pleasure of getting invited to London in order to attend the 20th UK Asian Film Festival 2018. The event itself will run in four cities across the United Kingdom from the 14th to 25th of March, 2018.

You really have to praise the UK Asian Film Festival 2018 because this year’s theme is honoring women empowerment to a whole new level. The official name of the theme is “F-rated”, meaning that the films who are assigned to certain movies and have a message that celebrates women empowerment in a progressive way. Not only did this festival include the beautiful Mahira Khan but it also invited her inspiring women in the industry who are fighting for women all over the world, through their roles in the films. The UK Asian Film Festival released this poster a week ago and we couldn’t stop our excitement!

Not only has Mahira Khan gave our country a proud moment but she has also proved that she is a superstar of her own. She was presented with the the Contribution to Film and Activism Award at the UK Asian Film Festival and we honestly couldn’t be more proud of her achievement!

The UK Asian Film Festival loved Mahira Khan so much that they featured her on their Instagram and gave a huge heads-up to the cast of the film.

A harrowing ordeal, a lack of justice serviced, and a tireless quest to take things into one’s own hands within a system designed to uphold the rich and powerful. When it comes to holding up a mirror up to society, there’s little doubt that anyone can do it better than Pakistani director Shoaib Mansoor. His Verna, a social drama starring Mahira Khan and debutant Haroon Shahid, is a powerful call to action for those who wronged by the system who are deprived of their right to justice. Due to its difficult yet deeply relevant subject matter, the film faced severe pushback from the Pakistani censor board and we are thankful to include it in this year’s line up to help spread the powerful message of the film. This screening will be introduced by special guest Mahira Khan, and will be preceded by the short film Unsilencing Sabeen. Along with many other inspiring women who are and have been fighting for women’s rights in Pakistan, Mahira Khan has proved to the world that Pakistani women are indeed a force to be reckoned with.

“We are very quick to make generalizations about people – all Muslims are terrorists, all Pakistani women are oppressed, all Pakistani men are abusing them,” Mahira explained. “The only reason people do that is because they don’t care enough to take the time to find out more. Because of this, I feel that I don’t just represent me, I represent every woman in Pakistan. I may not wear a hijab or have made the same choices, but there is a whole spectrum of women in Pakistan and I feel that I represent them.”

Mahira Khan through amazing her dedication and hard work, has become one of the most sought-out actresses of Pakistan who is also being recognized on an international platform.

Verna is screening on the 18th of  March at Regent Street Cinema, London, as part of the UK Asian film festival, which runs until the 25th March.
