Marvel has been getting a lot of love from fans, especially after the latest releases, Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther. And it looks like Marvel wants to return the love to a specific targetted audience using the Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan.
Stephen Wacker (VP, Creative Development, Marvel), has revealed that the studio is planning on creating more characters in the comics with a real toehold in Indian culture. He also said that Marvel will try for authenticity that can go as far as finding Indian talent.
“I think in the next few years Marvel is going to try to create characters with a real toehold in Indian culture. Try for authenticity that can go as far as finding Indian talent,” Wacker said.
“We want to find a way to create characters that have a home in this world so we can bring Indian culture to the core North American Marvel fan. Let them understand a different part of the world too. I think that’s going to be an exciting thing for Marvel. My hope is that the fan in India feels just as much part of the Marvel universe as some kid in New York,” he further added.
When asked who he would cast for such a character. He said, “If we make Indian content, we have to put Shah Rukh Khan. He has to be in it.”
Shah Rukh Khan has already played a superhero in a Bollywood sci-fic movie, Ra One. However, it might just be even more cool to see the King Khan on the Hollywood screens as a Marvel superhero.
Then again, there have been times when Shah Rukh Khan joked that he’ll never debut in Hollywood because he feels his English is a little weak. He also stated that instead of Bollywood actors going to Hollywood for movies, he wishes to see Hollywood actors make an entry in Bollywood.
“My own attempt is to make Indian films watched at that level. Again, not taking away from the greatness of anything that others have achieved, I’d like Tom Cruise to say one day that ‘I’ve been given a chance in a Hindi film’. Man, that will be wonderful. Christopher Nolan would say that there is a producer in India who wants him to make a film. Inshallah, that will happen.”
